Living labs are a relatively new approach to innovation that have gained significant attention over the past decade. Living labs refer to environments or ecosystems where various stakeholders such as users, researchers, entrepreneurs, and public authorities work together to co-create and test new ideas, products, and services in a real-life context. Living labs are a way to bridge the gap between the traditional research and development phase and the actual market introduction of innovations.

Innovation Launchpads, on the other hand, are programs or initiatives that support entrepreneurs and start-ups to develop and launch their innovative ideas into the market. These programs typically offer various types of support, such as mentoring, coaching, funding, and access to networks, to help entrepreneurs overcome the challenges of starting and scaling a new venture.

Living labs and innovation launchpads share a common goal of fostering innovation and supporting entrepreneurs, but they have different approaches and focuses. Living labs focus on co-creation and testing of new ideas, while innovation launchpads focus on helping entrepreneurs turn their ideas into successful businesses.

Despite their differences, living labs and innovation launchpads can work together to create a more robust ecosystem for innovation. Living labs can provide a testing ground for new ideas and products developed by entrepreneurs in innovation launchpads, while innovation launchpads can provide the necessary support and resources for entrepreneurs to turn their ideas into marketable products and services.

Living labs can also provide valuable feedback to entrepreneurs, helping them refine and improve their ideas before launch. By working with real-life users and other stakeholders, entrepreneurs can gain insights into how their products and services are perceived and used, and make necessary adjustments to meet their needs and preferences.

Innovation launchpads can also provide a pathway for living lab innovations to reach a broader market. Once a living lab innovation has been successfully tested and refined, innovation launchpads can help entrepreneurs commercialize their products and services, develop a customer base, and scale their business.

Living labs and innovation launchpads are two complementary approaches to innovation that can work together to create a more robust and sustainable ecosystem for innovation. By co-creating and testing new ideas in a real-life context, living labs can provide valuable insights and feedback to entrepreneurs in innovation launchpads, helping them turn their ideas into successful businesses. Conversely, innovation launchpads can provide the necessary support and resources for living lab innovations to reach a broader market and make a real impact.
